Black Sapote is a unique variety and is often called the 'Chocolate Pudding' or the 'Chocolate Persimmon' tree and they are a heavy cropper.
They are most often compared to chocolate mousse or custard and their flesh is soft and smooth. Sometimes people describe a slightly nutty, creamy or honey flavour as well.
The fruit is large with a mid-to-dark green skin and dark brown flesh inside. They are best picked when heavy in the hand but still hard and then allowed to ripen in the fruit bowl until the skin softens. Then scoop out and enjoy!
When you have an abundant harvest, the fruit can be pulped and frozen and then used in a multitude of recipes as desired. They are often enjoyed when added to smoothies, ice-cream recipes, into cakes and muffins or in sauces - and even wine!
