Pomelos are a truly fabulous citrus for the home garden, producing some of the largest and most impressive fruit in the citrus family. Beneath their thick, beautifully fragrant rind is an abundance of large, juicy segments with a wonderfully sweet, refreshing flavour. Ripe pomelos have a lovely natural sweetness and delicate citrus aroma that makes them particularly delicious eaten fresh.
The fragrance is part of the pleasure of growing pomelos too. Their large white flowers are wonderfully perfumed, while the thick rind releases that distinctive fresh citrus aroma as the fruit is peeled. Once the rind and pith are removed, the generous segments are easy to separate and make wonderfully satisfying fresh eating. They can also be added to fruit salads, salads and desserts where their sweetness and refreshing flavour really shine.
Pomelos are related to grapefruit, but are generally sweeter and less bitter, with a softer, more delicate citrus flavour. The fruit can become impressively large when grown in warm, suitable conditions, making a mature pomelo tree both an attractive feature in the garden and a wonderfully productive source of fruit.
Watson's Choice
Watson's Choice is a large-fruited pomelo producing juicy flesh with a pink to deeper pink colouring. The fruit has the characteristic thick pomelo rind and a sweet, refreshing flavour, with relatively few seeds. A vigorous tree for warm climates, Watson's Choice is a lovely choice if you are looking for a large, impressive pomelo with attractive coloured flesh.
Nam Roi
Nam Roi is a much-loved Vietnamese pomelo variety, producing large fruit with pale yellow flesh and a sweet, mildly tangy flavour. It is particularly appreciated for its juicy segments and relatively few seeds, although seed numbers can vary in the home garden. A wonderful choice for fresh eating, Nam Roi is well suited to warm and subtropical Australian gardens.
