Oro Blanco is an interesting grapefruit hybrid for those who enjoy the freshness of grapefruit but prefer a naturally sweeter, milder flavour.
A cross between a pomelo and a grapefruit, Oro Blanco produces large fruit with pale flesh and a thick greenish-yellow rind. Interestingly, the skin can remain quite green even when the fruit is ripe, so colour isn't always the best indication of when it is ready to eat.
The flesh is juicy and sweet, with much less of the bitterness associated with many traditional grapefruit varieties. This makes Oro Blanco an appealing choice for eating fresh as well as for juicing.
Oro Blanco is suited to warm conditions and is best planted in a sunny, sheltered position with good drainage. It can also be grown in a large pot, making it an interesting option where garden space is limited.
