Ruby Grapefruit is prized for its beautiful pink to deep-red flesh, juicy fruit and refreshing grapefruit flavour. Compared with traditional white grapefruit, the red-fleshed varieties are especially popular for their striking colour and are excellent eaten fresh, squeezed for juice or added to salads and drinks.

We stock three excellent red-fleshed grapefruit varieties — Star Ruby, Flame and Rio Red. All three are established varieties in Australian citrus growing, and each has its own characteristics. Simply choose your preferred variety from the drop-down menu when ordering.

(Citrus - QLD postage only)

Star Ruby is famous for its exceptionally deep red flesh and is recognised as the most intensely coloured of the red-fleshed grapefruit varieties. It was introduced to Australia from California in the early 1990s and has since become an established variety in Australian citrus growing; in Queensland trials, Star Ruby has also shown particularly good potential for later-season production.

If you're looking for a grapefruit with spectacularly deep-red flesh, Star Ruby is hard to beat.

Flame produces juicy pink-red flesh with attractive fruit and low seed numbers. Australian citrus industry trials describe its flesh colour as less intense than Star Ruby and Rio Red, but still noticeably more highly coloured than older pink varieties; Flame is grown in both subtropical and tropical parts of Australia.

Flame is a great choice if you enjoy a beautifully coloured grapefruit but would prefer a variety with relatively few seeds.

Rio Red is a popular red-fleshed grapefruit with excellent internal colour, often approaching the intensity of Star Ruby. Australian industry information classifies it as a low-seed variety, and the fruit develops attractive red and pink skin blush under suitable conditions.

Rio Red is an excellent choice for gardeners wanting a strongly coloured, low-seed grapefruit that has been grown successfully in Australia's warm citrus regions.

A note on fruit colour and harvest

The intensity of red colour in grapefruit can vary with variety, climate, season and growing conditions. In Queensland's warm conditions, fruit may also mature at different times depending on your location and the individual tree.

For the best eating quality, allow fruit to mature properly on the tree before harvesting.
