Villafranca is a classic lemon variety, valued for its juicy, aromatic fruit and its ability to produce a useful summer crop in Queensland. The medium-sized, oval lemons have a fragrant yellow rind and pale yellow flesh with plenty of juice and a traditional, tangy lemon flavour. Similar in appearance to Eureka lemons, they’re ideal for squeezing over fresh seafood, adding to dressings and marinades, or using in cakes, slices and homemade lemonade.
Originally from Sicily, Villafranca has long been grown in warmer regions where its cropping habits make it an appealing choice for home gardeners. In Queensland, it can produce a significant summer crop when grown and managed well, offering the pleasure of picking fresh lemons during the warmer months as well as enjoying the familiar versatility of a traditional lemon tree.
A vigorous citrus tree, Villafranca appreciates a sunny position and well-drained soil. Regular watering while establishing will help support healthy growth and fruit production. In Queensland’s humid coastal areas, good growing conditions and attention to prolonged wet weather can help maintain tree and fruit health.
A lovely choice for gardeners who enjoy cooking with homegrown citrus, Villafranca brings fresh flavour and practical value to the backyard orchard.
