Longan | Kohala & Chompoo

If you love Lychees, then we think you will love Longans. Longan is sometimes known as “Dragon's Eye” and is a beautiful evergreen fruit tree closely related to the lychee.

Longans produce clusters of sweet, juicy fruit wrapped in a brown-gold skin, with translucent flesh surrounding a single seed.

The flesh is naturally sweet and aromatic, making longan a delicious fruit to enjoy fresh straight from the tree.

Longans make a lovely addition to the edible garden. Given the right conditions, established trees can produce generous crops and can be grown either in the ground or in a large pot.

Longans are best suited to tropical and warm subtropical climates, and are grown commercially in Australia, particularly across Queensland and northern New South Wales. They prefer a warm, sunny position and good drainage, with protection from frost and very cold conditions. In cooler parts of Australia, they are best grown in a warm, sheltered microclimate where the tree has the best opportunity to grow and flower successfully.

Kohala is a well-established longan variety originally selected in Hawaii and has been grown and evaluated extensively in Australia. It produces sweet, aromatic fruit with a good amount of juicy flesh, and Australian trials have recorded good fruit quality and strong crops from Kohala under suitable growing conditions.

Kohala is a great choice for gardeners looking for a well-established variety producing attractive fruit with a naturally sweet and aromatic flavour.

Chompoo is a Thai longan variety valued for its crisp, sweet and well-flavoured flesh, with a characteristic faint pink tinge to the otherwise translucent flesh. It has been successfully grown and evaluated in Australia, including in Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Chompoo is an excellent choice if you enjoy a longan with a crisp texture, sweet flavour and attractive lightly coloured flesh.
